Caterham Sea Cadets – Supporting the community during COVID19

30 April 2020

When you think of a Sea Cadet or RM Cadet, you think of young people experiencing activities and adventures, learning teamwork and in growing self-confidence. So when Covid19 suspended all normal activities, the skills learnt at the Caterham Sea Cadets paid off.

John Wood, Officer in Charge, says, ‘we leapt into action. We have been helping the local community by supplying computers and office equipment to The Westway Hub, in order to set up an operations centre there. All the skill learned from being in Cadets including management, safe systems of work, risk assessments and people skills have all come in useful.

‘It’s been full on – there are 20 staff organised into 4 shifts and 100+ volunteers We have helped the 30,000 residents in the District by contacting 625 people on the vulnerable scale, We have taken orders, collected shopping and delivered to 147 people. We’ve also collected prescriptions and delivered to 68 people.

‘We are also helping to deliver PPE to medical facilities, care homes and care agencies throughout East Surrey from the Government and Council Distribution Centre in Surrey Fire and Rescue Service HQ in Reigate.’
