About Us:

Working with Tandridge's Family Support team, we provide trained volunteer mentors who provide long term, one to one support to local people and families, people like Sarah (name changed to protect privacy)

Sarah was 19, a mum who had left her partner following episodes of domestic violence. She had nowhere to go and had to sleep on sofas at friends’ houses. Recognising this was not a stable situation for her child, Sarah asked for a temporary fostering placement, but when that was made permanent, Sarah felt she wasn’t worthy as a mother, or as a person, and attempted suicide.

It was at this very low point in Sarah’s life that she was matched with Christine, one of Surrey Care Trust’s volunteer mentors. Christine recalls that Sarah’s self-esteem was ‘in her boots’; she was out of work, homeless and desperately missing her child.

Mentors like Christine act as advocates, giving a voice to those most in need, supporting in practical ways and helping to bring back stability. This can range from helping people to complete forms for housing or benefits, taking on volunteer opportunities, or in securing work. Mentors and our staff will also help mentees access other Surrey Care Trust support, such as Adult Learning courses, to increase their skills and confidence.

Meeting Christine once a week for 18 months, gave Sarah the chance to talk and be listened to; boosting her confidence and finding encouragement and support to make positive changes. They chatted about the issues that Sarah was struggling to cope with and discussed ways to move forwards. Gradually Sarah’s confidence improved. She began an Open University course, found a job and started a fledgling business of her own. Soon Sarah’s access to her child increased and she is now moving towards full custody once again.

Your support of Surrey Care Trust, through the Tandridge Lottery will mean we can keep helping more people like Sarah and break the cycle of disadvantage once and for all! Thank you and good luck!
