Tandridge Befriending Scheme is a friendship scheme for isolated or lonely people in the area - matching up a volunteer ‘friend’ who calls in for a chat and a cup of tea once a week. Increased funds would allow us to grow the numbers of volunteers, coordinate the service and provide friendship for greater numbers of lonely people.
Befrienders tell us –
‘He says that I am the only person he sees on a regular basis who he can call a friend’.
‘I am there because I want to be – it is not my job’.
‘Looking forward to every weekly visit is a two way thing, to be cherished’
‘She has become quite dear to me and when she says she wants to die, I say to her that ‘she has become like a second mum to me, and I would have no-one to visit if she did’.
Befriendees say –
‘My befriender is a true friend, kind and thoughtful. I don’t know what I would do without her’.
‘Having a Befriender has helped me enormously to overcome my loneliness. Those two hours of company a week make all the difference’.
‘I look forward to Monday every week. If I didn’t see J I wouldn’t see anybody’.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
Loneliness comes about as result of many factors – and not everyone has family or friends to support them. Those who are housebound due to illness or disability may not be able to take part in social activities or keep in contact with others in the same way. Confidence and self-esteem can be hugely affected by life changes such as bereavement or loss.
The valued Tandridge Befriending Scheme, rund by Tandridge Voluntary Action, has been running in the district since 2001. It relies on committed volunteer befrienders to make the scheme possible; they are the reason so many wonderful and positive friendships are made. Referrals to the Befriending Scheme come from a number of sources, including health and social services, local voluntary sector organisations, friends, family and individuals who are seeking support.
